It’s been a busy Summer of Codes and Standards! SDi President Rick Heffernan has been selected as a Technical Committee Member for NFPA 420 and NFPA 461. This past week, Pre-First Draft Meetings of NFPA 420 – Fire Protection of Cannabis Growing and Processing Facilities were held. This standard will address fire protection of cannabis growing and processing facilities and provide much needed guidance for the protection of employees and facilities that produce, process and extract cannabis. Later in the week, First Draft Meetings of NFPA 461 – Standard for Fire Protection of Spaceport Facilities were held in Cocoa Beach, Florida. The commercial space industry has grown to nearly 500 billion dollars per year globally and is poised to expand further. Currently, guidance needed for fire protection for building and managing facilities is extremely limited. At the request of the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), NFPA has committed to developing a brand new standard on spaceport construction and facility operation. Both of these standards currently under development will be providing vital guidance to growing industries in the near future!
